But before we do the easy Cinco De Mayo Makeup look lets find out what is Cinco de mayo !
Cinco De Mayo History
Cinco De Mayo, Spanish for “Fifth of May,” commemorates the Mexican army’s victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. It’s important to note that Cinco De Mayo is not Mexico’s Independence Day (which is celebrated on September 16), but rather a significant event in Mexican history that symbolizes resilience and national pride.
Why do we celebrate cinco de mayo
In recent years, Cinco De Mayo has gained popularity beyond Mexico, particularly in the United States. However, the reasons for its celebration often get misunderstood or misinterpreted. Many Americans associate Cinco De Mayo with Mexican culture, celebrating with festive parades, music, and of course, Mexican cuisine and drinks.
However, the irony lies in the fact that while Americans indulge in celebrating Mexican culture on this day, historical context often gets overlooked. The United States’ history includes the annexation of Mexican land, such as Texas, California, Arizona, Utah, Nevada etc which adds complexity to the celebration of Mexican heritage within American culture.
Moreover, the significance of the Battle of Puebla, which Cinco De Mayo commemorates, is sometimes misrepresented. It was a battle, not a war, and while Mexico won that battle, it was eventually defeated by the French in subsequent conflicts. Nonetheless, Cinco De Mayo has evolved into a cultural celebration, often accompanied by events that, for some, overshadow the historical context.
Cinco De Mayo Events
Across both Mexico and the United States, Cinco De Mayo is marked by various events and festivities. In Mexico, particularly in Puebla where the battle took place, there are military parades, reenactments, and cultural performances. It’s a day to honor Mexican heritage and the bravery of those who fought for their country.
In the United States, Cinco De Mayo is celebrated with street fairs, concerts, traditional dances like the Mexican Hat Dance, and of course, food festivals featuring tacos, guacamole, and margaritas.
When is Cinco De Mayo 2024
Cinco De Mayo falls on May 5th every year. In 2024, it will be celebrated on a Sunday.
Cinco De Mayo Makeup for beginners
Now, let’s delve into the fun part of Cinco De Mayo celebrations: makeup!
Follow along step-by-step to achieve a fresh and natural appearance that’s both chic and sexy, ideal for daytime Cinco De Mayo party and as a vibrant evening makeup look that can add an extra flair to your day.
Let’s dive into the beauty of Cinco De Mayo together!
For creating the perfect Cinco De Mayo makeup look, it’s crucial to prep your skin for a flawless finish.I begin by hydrating my skin with Loreal Revitalist Micro Essence Crystal Serum, which is ideal for acne-prone and oily skin types. It also soothes the skin very well.
Then, lock it in with Heimish Bulgarian rose satin cream. It not only hydrates but also works as a makeup primer, ensuring long-lasting makeup. Plus, with the powder of Bulgarian roses, you will smell heavenly.
Cinco De Mayo Eye Makeup
For the classic Cinco De Mayo makeup look, I will use the earthy brown tone from Nyx Cosmetics, specifically the Naked Brown Color Icon shade. You can opt for any muted matte shade on your eyelids for a natural yet defined look.
As for the colors of Cinco De Mayo makeup, I will stick to white, green, and red on the eyes. Nothing can be more pleasing than a sophisticated graphic eyeliner that gives the impression that you are a pro in makeup.
So, I will use the White Kajal pencil from Essence Cosmetics to draw the liner. However, I encountered a problem with this Kajal; although it is extremely pigmented, the heat caused the pencil to lose its shape after sharpening, leading to melting. That’s why I needed a thin brush to draw the lines. I picked the Maybelline brush that comes with a gel eyeliner; it’s awesome for drawing thin lines.
For the red eyeliner, I used the Hot Lipstick from Wet n Wild. It’s indeed a vibrant red shade and very easy to apply on the eyes while maintaining its intensity. A tip: avoid rubbing your eyes since it’s a lipstick, and it can come off.
For the green eyeliner, I selected the Shokh palette from Zay Beauty and chose a beautiful green shade from it. This time, I applied it on top of the red and towards the beginning of the eye.
Then, I used the white in my waterline and the green eyeshade under the eyes to make them look bigger and complete the look.
Of course, eye makeup is incomplete without mascara, so I used Maybelline Colossal Mascara. You can also use lashes for a glam effect, but personally, using fake eyelashes gives me the chills!
And don’t tell me you don’t love this easy-peasy Cinco De Mayo eye makeup!
Cinco De Mayo Makeup without foundation
And wait, we’re not done yet; we have to complete the base, my Girls, and I won’t be using foundation. Yes, you read it correctly! Because it’s hot, and we want the makeup to stay put for long, the trick is to use fewer products to appear natural, beautiful, yet glam up.
Now that we’re done with skincare, I’ll directly go for color correction using my favorite Tarte Amazonian Clay foundation in the shade – Sand. It’s darker than my skin tone and effectively hides all imperfections. The trick is to use it sparingly with your fingers. You can use any foundation that is darker than your skin tone, preferably stick foundation.
Once you’ve covered it all, use setting powder to lock in the color corrector. I’m using Laura Mercier powder and applying a generous amount of setting powder at this stage to ensure the color corrector stays in place since we’re not using foundation.
After letting it set, use concealer to brighten your face. I suggest using other products like powder bronzer first so that the setting powder has time to set; for the bronzer, I’m using the Monochromatic Duo Blush from Cover Fx, a beautiful muted brown shade that looks extremely elegant.
Now it’s time for the Photo Focus concealer from Wet n Wild. I’m using the shade Ivory because I’m using it as a highlighter under the eyes and on the high points of my face rather than as a concealer. After creating those sharp lines, blend thoroughly but avoid blending against them.
To set it in place again, use setting powder, but this time, use a light hand.
For blush, I’m using my favorite Doll Face blush from Luscious Cosmetics, applying it on the higher side of my cheekbones for a radiant glow.
As for the highlighter, I’m sticking to Maybelline Master Chrome highlighter on the high points of the face to add a touch of shimmer to the Cinco De Mayo Makeup. Oh man, this highlighter is an amazing creation by Maybelline — I LOVE IT!
Cinco De Mayo Makeup – red lipstick brown skin:
And what is an iconic Cinco de Mayo makeup without the red hot lipstick? For the lip liner, I have selected the Heartbreak Pout Maker from Luscious Cosmetics. It’s a tough matte lip liner that, although it looks extremely pretty, can be difficult to apply. But be patient for its gorgeous finish.
As for the lipstick, I’ve used another gem—a dupe of Ruby Woo from MAC by Loreal, called Haute Rogue 347. It gives a smooth sheen to the lips and makes them more hydrating.
Aicha’s Thoughts on Cinco De Mayo Makeup
With these products and a little creativity, you can create a stunning Cinco De Mayo Makeup look that celebrates Mexican culture and colors. Don’t be afraid to experiment and have fun with your makeup!
In conclusion, Cinco De Mayo is more than just a day of celebration; it’s a reminder of resilience, heritage, and the power of unity. I am in awe of the resilience shown by American students against the American establishment, raising their voice against the voiceless Palestinians trapped by the current-day Nazis—the Israeli and US Government.
So, while you’re enjoying traditional festivities or exploring makeup looks inspired by the vibrant Mexican culture, embrace the spirit of Cinco De Mayo and speak up against injustice, whether it is in your personal, professional life, or in society.
Happy Cinco De Mayo!
