Hey everyone! Welcome back to AichaBlogs.com! 🌸
If you want to channel your inner Sassenach for a day, here is my step-by-step guide to the perfect Claire Fraser Cosplay Makeup & Hair.

If you’re anything like me, you’ve spent many a late night binge-watching Outlander, dreaming of the Scottish Highlands, standing stones, and—let’s be honest—that ruggedly handsome Jamie Fraser. But as much as we love the drama and the romance, there is one thing that consistently steals the show for me: Claire Fraser’s effortless, “I just woke up in the 18th century” beauty.
Following up on my Arwen Makeup Tutorial, I wanted to tackle another iconic “natural” look. Claire Fraser (played by the stunning Caitriona Balfe) has a look that is the epitome of “less is more.” It’s rugged, it’s weather-beaten but beautiful, and it’s perfectly attainable with the right products. Here us a step by step guide on Claire Fraser Cosplay Makeup & Hair.
The Claire Fraser Aesthetic: Natural, Raw, and Radiant
Claire isn’t wearing winged liner or a bold red lip while she’s healing highlanders in the 1700s. Her beauty comes from her skin texture, her flush of color from the cold Scottish wind, and those soulful, piercing eyes. The goal here is “historical realism.” We want to look like we’ve been outdoors, but we still want to look camera-ready!
Step 1: The Base (That “Highland Glow”)
To start, we need a foundation that looks like skin. Claire doesn’t have a cakey, matte face. She looks hydrated and real.
I started with Max Factor Foundation (Get it here!). I love this because it provides great coverage without feeling heavy. It mimics that natural skin sheen perfectly. I followed up with the matching Max Factor Concealer to brighten under the eyes—because let’s face it, Claire probably didn’t get 8 hours of sleep while traveling through time!
💡 Pro Tip: If the Max Factor concealer is out of stock or you prefer a slightly different texture, the KIKO Alternate Concealer (Check it out!) is a fantastic backup that blends like a dream.
Step 2: Set it, Don’t Forget it
Even though we want a glow, we don’t want our makeup sliding off while we’re running away from Redcoats. I used a light dusting of the holy grail Laura Mercier Translucent Powder (Grab it here!). Focus on the T-zone, but leave the tops of the cheekbones slightly “bare” to keep that dewy look.
Step 3: The “Wind-Bitten” Flush
This is the most important part of the Claire Fraser look! She always has a natural, rosy flush as if she’s just stepped off a horse in the rain. For this, I used the Juvia’s Place Duo Blush (Get it here!).
Don’t just apply this to the apples of your cheeks. Sweep it slightly across the bridge of your nose and up toward your temples. This creates a “sun-kissed” or “wind-swept” effect that looks much more authentic for a 1700s cosplay.
Step 4: Soulful Eyes & Modern Magic
Claire’s eyes are very natural. No heavy eyeshadow here! I used a tiny bit of the blush in the crease of my lids just to give them some dimension.
For the lashes, I reached for a product I’ve raved about before: the Heimish Smudge Stop Mascara (Get it here!). Why? Because it’s a tubing mascara! If you’re at a convention all day, you don’t want “raccoon eyes.” This mascara gives you length and volume but stays put through sweat and Highland mist. It defines the eyes without looking like you’re wearing “heavy” makeup.
Step 5: The Stained Lip
Last but not least, the lips. Claire’s lips usually look like her natural color, perhaps just a bit bitten. I used Luscious Cosmetics Lipstick (Get it here!) in a soft nude-rose shade. Instead of applying it straight from the tube for a crisp line, I patted it on with my fingertips. This creates a “stained” look that is much more period-accurate.
Claire Fraser Cosplay Hair
Now, we can’t talk about Claire without talking about The Hair. Her wild, curly, often untamable mane is her trademark!
- The Texture: If you have natural curls, embrace them! If not, use a small-barrel curling iron to create tight, bouncy curls. Don’t worry about them being perfect—in fact, the messier, the better.
- The Volume: Claire’s hair has incredible volume. Flip your head upside down and give it a good shake. Use a bit of dry shampoo or texturizing spray at the roots to keep that “big hair” energy alive.
- The Style: In the later seasons, Claire often wears her hair in a practical half-up, half-down style or a loose bun with stray pieces framing her face. The key is to make it look functional—like she pinned it up quickly to get to work in her surgery!
Final Thoughts: Channel Your Inner Sassenach
Cosplaying Claire Fraser is all about confidence and embracing a more raw version of beauty. It’s a refreshing break from the heavy contour and bold liners of modern trends.
