High Contrast Makeup Theory
Before, we jump into the tutorial, let’s break down the High Contrast Makeup Theory for those who are new to the concept. Contrast makeup comes in three main categories: High Contrast, Medium Contrast, and Low Contrast.
High Contrast Makeup suits individuals whose skin, eyes, and hair have a distinct contrast from one another. This includes people with fair skin and dark hair, or deep skin tones with light-colored eyes/hair. High contrast makeup works beautifully on individuals from regions like Northern Italy, Argentina, East Asia, parts of Central Asia, and the Levant.
Popular Medium Contrast Makeup Styles:
- French Girl Makeup: Bold eyeliner and red lips
- Indian Makeup: Bold eyes and bold red/maroon lips
- High Glam Party Makeup : Bold lips and Bold eyes
High Contrast Makeup vs Low Contrast

High Contrast Makeup Tutorial for Medium Skin – Glam Makeup Look
The foundation is EVERYTHING when it comes to high contrast makeup.
Daytime Party Makeup Look
I always start with the Body Shop Mattifying Primer to create a smooth, oil-free base. It keeps my makeup fresh and shine-free all day.
Then, I used Huda Beauty Foundation in Amaretti—this is absolutely perfect for creating a full-coverage look without feeling cakey. It gives that glowy, matte finish perfect for high contrast looks.
Concealer
A little hack I love is using Inglot HD Foundation in shade 84 as a concealer. It’s one shade darker than my usual foundation, making it perfect for color correcting and concealing acne marks and dark circles.
Then, I used Tarte Shape Tape Highlighter on the cheek bones below my eyes to brighten my eyes.
Once everything is seamlessly blended, I set the concealed areas with Laura Mercier Setting Powder, which locks the makeup in place
Amywine House Eyeliner
Time to make your eyes the star of the show. I started with Wet n Wild Color Icon Naked Brown Blush as my base. It gives a soft matte finish and is perfect for blending. For a pop of shimmer, I dabbed a little gold shimmer on the center of my eyelids.
Next up, the signature Amy Winehouse Eyeliner! 😘 Using Maybelline Hyper Easy Pen in Black, I created a dramatic wing, channeling those retro vibes. Don’t be afraid to go bold with your eyeliner.
Finish off with a few coats of Maybelline Mascara for voluminous lashes that stand out.
Cheeks: Bold and Fiery
For the cheeks, I went with a unique approach: instead of a creamy red blush, I used red lipstick dots. After blending, I added the Wet n Wild Date or Dominate Blush for that fiery glow. To highlight, I used the MAC Hyper Real Glow Palette for a soft, natural glow that tied everything together
Classic Red Lip – High Contrast Makeup Tutorial
For the classic red lip look, I selected the Ruby Woo lipstick to give the perfect bold look of a French girl makeup. It complimented so well with the overall look and I think tune out a little bit like a 70’s look too
Evening Makeup Look for Dark Skin – 80’s makeup Looks
For a more intense evening makeup look, let’s take it up a notch with a bold 80’s-inspired glam.
Foundation
For foundation, I chose the full-coverage Ingrid Luminous Foundation, which is also a dupe for the Giorgio Armani foundation. Then, I applied a concealer from Rimmel on the cheekbones under the eyes as a highlighter and blended it upwards.
Glitter eyes – Blue eye makeup
I started with MAC Carbon Black eyeshadow along the upper lash line, blending it upwards. Then, I applied Huda Beauty Sapphire Obsessions on the lid for a bold blue eye, extending the blue to the lower lash line with black underneath, blending seamlessly.
A touch of Kiko silver glitter on the lid made my eyes pop, while Guerlain brown shadow softly diffused the edges .
Cheeks – Warm chilled look
For blush and bronzer, I repurposed MAC Red Brick eyeshadow as a bronzer and applied it to my cheeks. For a subtle glow, I used MAC Strobe Cream as my highlighter
Bold Lips:
For the nighttime look, I completed the look with my favorite lipstick from Bobbi Brown, Your Majesty. And just like that, our look is complete.
