Aicha’s Experience

Since metallic makeup become a rage among the beauty enthusiast of the world, I wanted to get my hands on the orange – copper metallic lipstick. Metallic Makeup is  the trend of the 90’s that has made a come back. Similar copper orangish hues were quite popular  among the ladies. While looking for it in the store, the beauty advisor from Artedco Cosmetics suggested me Artedco Orange Copper Lipstick from their Perfect Color Lipstick range. It turned out to be a beautiful hue against my brown skin and the sparkles in the lipstick got me attracted, immediately.

The beauty turned into a beast  instantly as I applied it on the lips. It was because the swatch on the hand showed me a different picture altogether. Artedco Orange Copper Lipstick completely washed me out and made me appear like a sickly girl in need of blood.  In order to remedy it, I reapplied it along with a red lipstick as a base, dabbing Orange Copper Lipstick all over my lips to make it, pop which actually fulfilled the purpose of a lip strobe as well.

Presence of mica in Artedco Orange Copper Lipstick

I didn’t found the texture to be very creamy, it was grainy and coarse, a thing that I didn’t expect but perhaps due to the presence of MICA, which gave it a glittery overall look, it appeared like that.  Moreover, I didn’t find the lasting good, it was transferring on the glass while I sipped and drank and didn’t last  more than 1 hour. However, the mica particles stayed and gave a sparkly effect to the lips.

Also, the shade doesn’t complement the brown skin, Indian/Pakistani skin tone and need a darker base to make it look good. It is better suited as a strobe and I don’t recommend using it alone on the tanned skin.

Why the swatch of lipsticks on hand is safe

Often the swatch on hand turns misleading and can direct in a totally opposite direction. However, I’m fine with taking this risk and would never recommend using  already opened samples of lipsticks on the lips because  it has too much bacteria and germs from being used on numerous people.

PARABEN CONTROVERSY IN COSMETICS

What is Paraben ?

Back to the supermarket trip, I didn’t realise the ingredients has not been mentioned on the lipstick box. On the card board casing  and  even on the plastic tube, just a number mentioned at the bottom. Many weeks later, when I searched the ingredients of the lipstick, I found out that it has PROPYLPARABEN in it. Propylparaben is a category of Paraben. Introduced in 1923 as a preservative in cosmetics/personal care to increase the shelf life of the products as it prevents bacterial growth.

Why the furore over Paraben in cosmetics

Parabens came to spotlight, when in 2004, a small study found traces of Parabens in breast cancer tissue, further study into the matter revealed that it could enhance the spread of the disease and is not a direct cause of breast cancer or tumours. It is important to know that Parabens are not water soluble, can penetrate our skin  and absorbs in our blood stream. Because, it is a endocrine deceptive chemical that mimics estrogen, it could disrupt the hormonal functions in the body.

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review , in its report  dated October 7, 2019  has published that Parabens are safe, only if the formulation doesn’t exceed 0.8% threshold of using using Parabens combined in the making of a product. But, this might be partially true if parabens combined with other agents that could have a harmful effect on us.

Moreover,  FDA  admits that at the time it has not enough information showing that  Parabens as it is now used in cosmetics have any effect on human health , it goes by the policy of insignificant data means a safe product until proven otherwise. Similarly, the EU goes by the same policy but it has banned certain Parabens until a conclusion about the safety of the Parabens can be reached.

Till Science gives a verdict

It is true that in small quantities parabens could be easily broken by the human body, its reaction with other agents is debatable until a conclusive evidence regarding its safety could be reached. Till then, who ever is using it is a guinea pig. Sounds scary!
